About Parking in NW Portland
People who visit NW Portland (aka "Nob Hill", aka "Alphabet District" ) often have a distorted view of the parking
situation. They usually think it's much worse than reality. There's no question that parking is more challenging than many
other Portland neighborhoods. But those of
us who live here know some things you might not and living in a great neighborhood
makes up for the additional effort. Here are more things to consider ...
- We drive much less. Residents don't drive every time they go somewhere. With all the amenities nearby (shopping, movie theatre,
restaurants & cafes, streetcar, buses and MAX train into downtown and
elsewhere) - some of us don't see our cars for days or weeks. Ask NW residents how many times they've actually forgotten where they've parked their car on the street - and you'll get a knowing smile.
- We know where to look. Visitors are often unclear on valid spaces & days of the week. With all the different types of parking, it can be confusing. Residents however have learned the
"lay of the land" and don't waste their time reading signs and missing
good spots.
- We know the best and worst times. Residents know where they are more
likely to find spaces and at what times. We don't waste time looking in the
places that are usually "parked up" at certain hours of the day.
- We know how to get a space. When a space opens up, NW residents know
how to grab it. If it's on the other side of the street - usually rather than
looping around the block - we'll U-turn right into the space (except on NW
21st and NW 23rd).
- NOTE: As of 01/14/2014, we have learned this next item is no longer valid. We are currently seeking updated policy details from Good Sam Hospital ...
We know about the free secret parking on nights & weekends. At Good Sam hospital, anyone can park for free nights & weekends (certain parking lots and times). Visitors and many residents don't know about this. For residents who want to use the lot regularly, you should get a permit from the NW Neighborhood Association - click here for the form with all the details. It's only $8.00.
